Among the most significant symbolic landmarks in the Antillo area is the Peace Bell, a monument of strong cultural and commemorative value dedicated to those missing in all wars.
The initiative originated in 1983 within the local community, with the aim of creating a lasting tribute to preserve the memory of those who disappeared in conflicts that have shaped modern history. From the beginning, the project had a collective dimension, involving institutions, associations, and citizens in a shared effort.
To support its realization, a dedicated committee was established. Thanks to the contribution of the Municipality of Antillo, public institutions, private organizations, and local residents, the project led to the commissioning of a large bell in 1992 from the Pontifical Marinelli Foundry, one of the oldest and most renowned bell foundries in the world.
The bell, weighing approximately five tons and measuring about six meters in circumference, represents a remarkable example of high-level craftsmanship, as well as a powerful universal symbol of peace and remembrance.
In 1993, the bell was blessed by Pope John Paul II, further enhancing its spiritual significance and giving the project an international dimension beyond the local context.
The bell was finally installed on September 21, 2007, on the occasion of the International Day of Peace promoted by the United Nations, at Pizzo Monaco, a panoramic hill located in the heart of the Agrò Valley.
From this elevated position, the sound of the bell spreads across the valley, reinforcing the symbolic role of the site as a place of reflection and shared memory.
Today, the area is also a popular destination for hikers and visitors, as it can be reached through natural trails immersed in the landscapes of the Peloritani Mountains. The surrounding environment offers a well-rounded experience that combines cultural value with outdoor exploration.
The ascent to Pizzo Monaco allows visitors to pass through diverse natural settings and reach scenic viewpoints overlooking both mountainous areas and the Ionian coastline. This makes the visit particularly appealing for those interested in trekking, landscape photography, or combining outdoor activities with cultural exploration.
